University City, just west of center city, is the home of the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel University, the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, hospitals such as HUP and Children's and the University City Science Center and to a lot of late 19th century homes and churches. The area is mostly residential, with scattered pockets of commercial activity.
The University City District is a great source for local information for nearby restaurants, accommodations, stores, movies, entertainment, etc. Click on the UCD link for local attractions. Click on the PHILLY link for the official PA visitors guide. Check out the University City Historical Society for a little insight into this historical Victorian neighborhood.
University City features a wide variety of restaurants ranging from ethnic delights such as African, Ethiopian, Indian, Italian, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Mexican, and Thai to Continental and American cuisine. Venues range from take-out to fine dining. Some of our favorites include Abbraccio, Rx, Dahlak, The White Dog, and of course, Vientiane Cafe. Dock St. Brewery and Vietnam Cafe are now open neary.
The Carriage House is convenient to public transportation. Electric trolleys (SEPTA Rt. 13) will pick you up at the corner and take you to Penn, Drexel, or to the Pennslvania Convention Center in center city.
